Singapore Tuition Agencies Compared: What the Reviews Actually Show

Singapore Tuition Agencies Compared: What the Reviews Actually Show
Search "best tuition agency Singapore" and you'll get a dozen pages each claiming to be the #1 pick — several of them are the agencies' own websites. Kiasuparents, probably the most-used parenting forum in Singapore, puts it more plainly: "you're unlikely to find a comprehensive and objective ranking system that scores these centres on a broad range of factors." We think that's the honest starting point, so instead of inventing a definitive ranking, here's what we could actually verify about the more established agencies, sourced and dated — plus, just as importantly, what we couldn't verify and left out.

HOW WE CHECKED

For each agency we cross-referenced its own claimed Google rating and review count against at least one independent source (a comparison write-up, a forum mention, or a separate directory listing) — the same approach we used for the PSLE cut-off data and MOE salary figures in earlier posts. Two things came up worth being upfront about:
One agency's own homepage displayed a rating of 23,797 reviews at a perfect 5.0 stars — wildly out of line with every other agency in this space, including every independent mention of that same agency, which consistently put it at roughly 400+ reviews and 4.8 stars. We've used the independently-corroborated figure below and left the self-published one out. Two other agencies in the comparison don't display a review count or rating we could independently confirm at all — rather than guess, we've marked those as unverified.
Review counts also climb over time and some of our comparison sources were themselves a couple of years old, so treat the numbers below as a reasonable recent snapshot, not a live figure — check the agency's current Google listing before you decide.

WHAT EACH ONE ACTUALLY OFFERS

This is coverage as each agency states it on their own site — not a claim about which is "best" for a given subject or age, since that's not something the review data actually breaks out by.
FamilyTutor (familytutor.sg) covers Preschool through University, including IB, IGCSE, and IP, across a wide subject list plus enrichment options like piano. Its main pitch is closer, family-fit matching and a no-advance-payment policy — you don't pay until lessons start and you're satisfied.
SmileTutor (smiletutor.sg) covers Kindergarten through University, including IB, IP, IGCSE, Polytechnic, and standardised tests like the SAT and IELTS. With the largest tutor pool in this comparison, it's a reasonable first call for an unusual subject combination or an odd schedule — the tradeoff some parents report is a less personal vetting process given the scale, occasionally needing two or three tutor swaps before the right fit.
Tutor Circle (tutorcircle.sg) covers Preschool through University and, unusually among this group, adult learners too. Subject range is broad — languages, humanities, maths, sciences, and exam prep from PSLE through A-Level.
MindFlex / Singapore Tuition Teachers (singaporetuitionteachers.com) covers Preschool through University, including AEIS, IB, and IGCSE. Its distinguishing pitch is speed — an express service claiming to match a tutor within 6 hours, useful if you're already behind on term and need someone this week.
Genius Mind Home Tuition (singaporehometutors.com) covers Preschool through University, including O-Level, A-Level, IGCSE, IB, AEIS, and special-needs tuition, plus music lessons. It's the longest-running agency in this comparison by a clear margin, operating since 2012.
SchTutors (schtutors.com) covers Primary, Secondary, and Junior College only — no preschool, IB, or tertiary levels listed. What it trades breadth for is a hard specialisation: every tutor in its database is a current or former MOE school teacher, which is a genuinely different pool from the other five agencies here, all of which also list full-time and part-time non-MOE tutors.

A PRACTICAL THING WORTH KNOWING: HOW AGENCIES ACTUALLY GET PAID

Matching is usually free for parents, which understandably raises the question of how an agency makes money. The standard structure in Singapore is a commission taken from the tutor, not the parent — typically around 50% of the first month's tuition fees, either deducted from what the tutor is paid or briefly routed through the agency before the tutor's share is released. From the second month onward, the full fee goes to the tutor directly. It's a reasonable trade for parents (matching risk sits with the agency, not you), but it's worth knowing if you're a tutor sizing up whether to register with one — that first month's take-home is roughly half of what you'll actually see from month two.

WHERE GRANDMASTER FITS IN

If you're a parent, the trade-off with any agency is time: you describe what you need and wait for a match, without seeing a tutor's actual track record until after they've been assigned. GrandMaster's search skips that step — every mentor has a public profile with real reviews from completed sessions, so you can compare tutors directly before reaching out, the same way you'd compare the agencies above.
If you're a tutor reading this because you're weighing where to register, it's worth knowing GrandMaster doesn't take a cut of your first month the way an agency commission does — you set your own rate (our tuition rate guide can help you land on a number), and that's what you keep from lesson one. Becoming a mentor takes a few minutes.
